Chicken Lady here again. She has two big hens with her this time. Turns out a bunch of people who adopted chickens and other pets over the past two years have given them up for various reasons.
I did an online search for "pandemic pets abandoned". It's especially bad in India, apparently. A lot of people adopted pets to tide them over in isolation then got rid of their pets when jobs, local laws, etc. no longer required staying home. Allergies is a highly understandable reason, especially if you had no way of knowing ahead of time it would be a problem for you or someone in your household and weren't offered pet allergy testing. Another likely factor is inflation (it's affecting other countries, too!) pricing people out of proper pet care.
